Rise of cà phê culture

Vietnamese coffee or cà phê in Vietnamese is well known throughout the world but this wasn’t always so. It was only in recent years that Vietnamese coffee attained a more sophisticated reputation after garnering some international awards and after coffee entrepreneurs introduced the strong coffee to countries like the US and Europe.

About 97% of Vietnam’s coffee beans are the robusta variety which is known for their bold, earthy, bitter flavour, and high caffeine content as opposed to arabica. Robusta beans are typically used to make instant coffee and supermarket blends, hence does not enjoy the same status as arabica beans. This is changing however.

Young coffee entrepreneurs are experimenting with robusta’s flavours a nd presenta tion while some baristas have even won international awards using Vietnamese coffee.
