The young next generation developers are a well-travelled lot. Having gone far and being exposed to various overseas lifestyle developments, they are infusing global trends, concepts and ideas into their developments to benefits the local real estate scene. In this exclusive interview, YES paper delves behind the scenes to gauge their future directions. Close on the heels of Visit Malaysia 2020 peeking upon the horizon, and buoyed by optimism despite an overall sluggish market sentiment, here’s how they are seizing the silver lining to turn the property market around.

Hailing from the historical city of Melaka loved by tourists, next generation developer Jojo Gwee is confident that with Visit Malaysia 2020, the state government’s aim to increase tourist arrivals from 18 mil to 20 mil by 2020 is achievable.
“This will improve the take-up rate of hotel rooms, AirBnb and the retail sector, and boost Melaka’s economy,” she says.
“The focus of our development is living in a greener and more sustainable city. We’re promoting green homes and buildings in Melaka in line with the state’s Melaka Berwibawa, Pintar, Hijau, Bersih tagline. We also hope to bring more cultural designs to promote Melaka Baba Nyonya-style buildings,” she says.
Amid soft current market conditions, she will launch 10 small scale projects comprising 420 units of landed properties in Melaka’s historical city to serve local market demand while working closely together with the state government to attract foreign investments.
Commending Australia for its spacious, practical, systematic and efficient building designs, she says their work-life balanced lifestyle has ranked Melbourne and Sydney as amongst the world’s most liveable cities.

What are the emerging trends?

I think that Senior Citizen Wellness Centres integrated with facilities such as medical clinics, clubhouse cum leisure activity centre, cleaning services and shuttle services, will be emerging trends in the future housing development plan.

The most fascinating country you’ve visited? What’s next on your bucket list?

My most recent trip was to the five-star eco-friendly Maldives Hurawalhi Island Resort. The world’s largest all-glass 5.8 metre undersea restaurant is situated in this resort. With only 16 acres size of an island in Lhaviyani Atoll, I’m amazed by the development of the undersea restaurant that has a 415-tonne structure built 5.8 metres below the sea. It practices sustainable development with the extension of solar panels used as the decorative walkway which also powers the resort. Next on my bucket list to visit is the Safari National Park and the modern Nairobi city in Kenya, Africa.
