AN ANTI-CLIMAX YEAR AFTER EVENTFUL 2015?

THINGS WILL RETURN TO NORMAL, DECLARES FENG SHUI EXPERT.

Danger from Northeast?

fengshui2The 2016 hexagram for Malaysia is IOO.IOO – “Zhen”, the Arousing (Shock, Thunder). It is the 51st hexagram in the King Wen sequence, with a binary value of 36. The top and bottom trigrams are identical – “Zhen”, Thunder. It indicates a loud noise, excitation, division and revolution.

This hexagram may be “peeled” to reveal its hidden meaning. In this case, it yields OOI.OIO – “Chien”, Obstruction. The hexagram comprises OOI (Mountain) below and OIO (Water) above. This indicates danger involving water and the northeast.

If you see danger and know when to stop, you are wise. The southwest will benefit when it is righteous; but the northeast will not gain because the road is a dead end. When changes occur, one must always be in the right place-otherwise, it will not be beneficial. This is how the leader can put the country or company on the right course, but to do so requires drastic sacrifices.

The northeast sector in Malaysia is Sabah, and danger with water indicates that there will be a rise in problems from the Philippines, such as piracy, hijackings and kidnappings. Despite the presence of Eastern Sabah Security Command (ESSCOM), there will likely be more criminal incursions from the Philippines.

Trouble from the northeast can also refer to the state of Sabah making more demands from the federal government. It will likely demand for more oil royalty payments, cabinet positions and autonomy. To remain in power, the ruling coalition may have to yield to these demands – although some concessions have been given in 2015. There will be big losses, great difficulty and danger ahead.

Interestingly, the main beneficiary will be the southwest sector – Johor. Will the demands of Sabah and the general uncertainty (sound of thunder) provide Johor with the opportune chance to press its own demands?

Geologically, Sabah may also experience increased seismic activity. The series of earthquakes in Ranau in June 2015 was not the first ever experienced in Sabah. In 1976, Lahad Datu was hit by a 5.8-magnitude earthquake. Geologists say that Sabah sits away from any tectonic plate boundaries, and yet Sabah is slowly moving towards the northwest.

There is an intriguing circular valley called the Maliau Basin near Tawau. It looks suspiciously like an extinct volcanic caldera although geologists say it is a sedimentary formation of sandstone and mudstone. This Lost World-like basin was only discovered in 1947 by a pilot and the first expedition was launched in 1988. The local Murut do not stay in the basin. Perhaps there was a volcano previously, and Sabah may experience more earthquakes in 2016 even without the presence of naked tourists. (Ed’s Note: A group of tourists stripped naked on Mount Kinabalu, Malaysia’s highest mountain; days after that, a strong earthquake struck Sabah including Mt Kinabalu, killing 18).

The northeast can also be interpreted as Kelantan and Terengganu, 2 states located on the northeast of Peninsular Malaysia. The “peeling” process reveals water and danger. This may indicate a repeat of the major floods of 2014, particularly in Month 9. There may also be a disease outbreak in Month 6 – possibly a rise in dengue or worse, the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS).

False alarm?

The double “Zhen” trigram indicates a loud and scary thunder, originating from Zhen’s home quadrant, east. People near and far- a majority of the populace-will fear for their wellbeing and good fortune. Eventually, they will discover that the threat is not real and they will laugh in relief. They will stay true to their ancestors’ legacy.

There will be a lot of speculation and fears over current affairs in Malaysia – economic slowdown, shrinking currency, political turmoil, incursions of pirates and kidnappers, secession of east Malaysian states from the federation – but they will likely fizzle out without escalating.

Shaking from thunder – People in power or administration should evaluate and improve themselves in preparation for what they are about to do. The thunder frightens the people who fear for their wellbeing but later, when they realise what is really happening, they will laugh about it; the situation is not so scary after all and the changes are beneficial and good. It was a false alarm.

A big event, such as the union of systems – political parties/factions, states, nations and so forth – upsets third parties who are not involved in the union. They protest and bring the matter to the courts.

The hexagram implies that 2016 will be one where we deal with the aftermath of events that occurred in 2015. There will be some major, dramatic and possibly drastic events in 2015 that create fear like the sound of thunder.

This will cause many to flee to the mountains, out of fear they will be victimised. They will eventually return when they realise things are not as bad as first thought. The situation will return to normal.

Change will continue and prevail, despite glitches along the way. Thunderous change will create potential danger and challenging problems, but it will not cause major damages or losses. Nevertheless, despair, uncertainty about the future, tussles and complaints may curb certain changes.

Eventful 2015

In the Malaysian context, many events have unfolded in 2015:

The break-up of political alliances due to internal bickering and the push for hudud laws (Muslim-based laws);

The formation of new parties and alliances;

Sabah becoming more agitated due to cases of kidnappings, the “IC project” and growing Islamisation within the state, and the sacking of key political figures;

The deterioration of the ringgit’s value;

fengshuiGoods and Services Tax (GST) increasing the cost of living, especially for the lower-income group;

The slump in global oil prices, affecting the nation’s revenues, while petrol prices remained relatively high;

The 1MDB imbroglio – the scandal of missing funds, sackings, disruption and intimidation of parties investigating potential wrongdoings;

Political “donations” that may be construed as compromising national security and interests;

Growing activism and street protests, and the polarisation of races; and

The royalty becoming more vocal on public affairs.

There is growing fear and uncertainty among the people. These events of 2015 will be the source of the terrifying thunder that causes many to fear for their future. Many may even flee to the hills (migrate or transfer their assets abroad).

The fate of the national leadership remains unclear at time of writing. Will the present leader remain in his position or leave – voluntarily or involuntarily – is a question on the general public’s minds. If he makes way, will his successor be ruthless and iron-fisted or could he turn out to be kind, benevolent and capable?

Could there be a snap election or a declaration of emergency along with a suspension of parliament? Both are unlikely scenarios but raise fear nonetheless. People may flee the country, and later return after realising everything is fine.

Based on the hexagram, it is very likely the flashpoint will come from the northeast sector, namely Sabah. As discontent and security fears grow in the Land Below the Wind, the federal government will likely make more concessions to keep the state happy. It will also have to address the problem of incursions by pirates and kidnappers from southern Philippines. At the time of writing, The Prime Minister has promised to give Sabah and Sarawak more autonomy.

The southwest that is likely to also benefit in 2016 refers to the state of Johor, which is seeing rapid development in the Iskandar project.
